Agreed, MM *still* are total schlong-bags (well in Wellington anyway). They were a good set-up 20 years ago when starting out in Christchurch but seemed to drift into mediocrity when the chain stores were opened. I just rang them at 1pm on a Thursday and the call rang off without an answer. Probably three muppets were engaged in a conversation about the iPad with a chin-stroking backpacker 2 feet from the phone. This is Customer Service 101 doesn’t matter who’s product you’re selling.

Play TV avaiable now for preorder from $193.99 from Fishpond. Also advertises that the EPG works. Doesn’t sound right to me but you never know.

Just another update… following a software update that was made available over the weekend, the UK unit that I bought to NZ is now working perfectly.

The unit decodes and upscales all freeview channels, including the 5.1 audio of TV3.

Live TV buffering (PVR) functionality is all working perfectly. If you schedule a recording, the PS3 will wake up, display a message that it is recording and will automatically switch off when finished.

The only gripe is that the programme guide is only populated for the next few hours, though placeholders for program information are shown for the next couple of days.

You can’t schedule two channels to record at the same time in the future (but you can view one while another is recording).

Interestingly, the initial setup menu has an option for Australia now (it didn’t used to) – which includes options for each territory.

Anyway, its working! If they start selling these in NZ, Sony will sell these by the bucketload.

I upgraded my PS3 to 320GB, so should have enough storage for the next while!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Unfortunately I had no luck getting a usable setup for my Media PC which is now sitting gathering dust. Most of the DVR apps are rubbish for some reason or other, and there’s serious problems with my ATI drivers decoding interlaced HD x264.

I’m sure I’ll pick it up again sooner or later once ATI pulls finger. Keep your eyes peeled for my next post regarding Big Media and their fear of technology.

I agree, Grisha. It’s the response of the religious right to wikipedia. You might find that the articles “reflect the opinion of Republicans and traditionalists” (that alone is a giveaway; it shouldn’t reflect opinions but represent FACTS), but just a cursory glance at some of their articles reveal a HUGE pro-Christian slant. Take a look at the main page for starters; you’d be hardpressed to find an article that DOESN’T deal with Christianity or the bible. Compare the entries of George W. Bush and Barack Hussein Obama, their refusal to use BCE and CE, their “conservative bible project”, and countless others.

Here’s a sample of the popular articles at conservapedia:

Atheism
Jesus Christ
Bible
Intelligent design
Creationism
Creation Science
Hollywood values
Creation Ministries International
Theology
Christianity
Christian apologetics

Etc., etc., etc. You get the picture.

However, I fully agree that conservapedia is a joke!

I was going to attempt the same thing, TVNZondemand Boxee app. I mean shouldn’t b to hard most of the American apps are esentially “browser casts”. Then again the tvnzondemand interface is rather archaic and incoherent.

Another upside to tvnzondemand is it’s in orcon’s “o-zone” so data usage doesn’t count to ur cap.
